 Titel:  A Book Of Snakes. Boas and Pythons. Picture Book
A Book of Snakes (Boas & Pythons)

This “Picture Book” is written by Bob Clark, Yoshio Ito, Eriko Miyai, Osamu Sunagawa, Hiroaki Kimura and Osamu Tanaka. On the bit more then 130 pages you`ll find great and often unique photos. But nevertheless it is called a picture book, I was a bit disappointed because even the subtitle under each photo is very sparse, that you can read only the common name of the shown snake (no latin name, nore the mutation –Albino; Granite etc….). Another time I was surprised to I find several pages with advertising in this book (but now I think positive about that, because of that I go introduced to Japanese homepages…..).
Officially this book is bilingual (English/Japanese) but because all of the main informations are only printed in Japanese this book is only limited recommended (for every body who is only interested in fantastic photos it is to be recommended).

On more of 200 pages of this book you`ll find every Reptile on one page, with one photo, a distribution map and a short description. Because there are not so many Pythons in NSW you “only” can find Aspidites ramsayi, Antaresia maculosus, A. stimsoni, Morelia spilota spilota and M. s. ssp. (variegata). Hence the distribution maps are that great, this book will be an enrichment in the library of every “Python enthusiast”!!

This 1996 published book has 239 pages, where you can find on the pages 62 – 87 a chapter about the Boids of PNG. To this following python species - Morelia viridis, M. amethistina, M. s. harrisoni (variegata), M. boeleni, Leiopython albertisii, Bothrochilus boa, Apodora papuana and Liasis mackloti (fuscus) - you`ll find always informations about the Description, Habitat, Habits, Diet, Taxonomic note and Distribution. Fantastic photos, great maps and a lot quite interesting and often unique informations make this book for all “Herpers” indispensable and for a “Morelia- Python fan” to a must in their libary!!

Australian Reptiles & Frogs from Raymond T. Hoser goes published the first time in 1989. This book counts a bit more then 230 pages with a lot of great and often unique photos from the Australian Reptiles and their habitats. The informations to the single species/subspecies are always short, like you`ll know it from a field guide, but mostly with a distribution map.
You`ll find in this book the following Python species/subspecies: Aspidites ramsayi, A. melanocephalus (incl. a extraordinary Black Head = very whitish), Antaresia childreni, A. maculosus, A. perthensis, A. stimsoni, Liasis olivaceus, Morelia amethistina, M. bredli, M. viridis, M. oenpelliensis, M. spilota spilota, M. s. metcalfei, M. s. mcdowelli, M. s. variegata and some hybrids. All in all this book is very much to be recommended, because beside a lot of general informations it shows lot of the Australien Reptiles and the Australian nature.

The book Keeping Carpet Pythons from S. Kortlang & D. Green is with 40 pages sadly a quite small book. Nevertheless you`ll find a lot of general informations, good photos, maps and some drawings. Hence all informations to the species/subspecies are very short (like you`ll know from a Fild Guide), and some informations (outdoor enclosures) are made only for Australian keepers (or people who lives in a pretty warm country) this book is mainly for “Carpet Python Freaks” who will read all they could get (like me...)....so, all in all, I could imagine the “normal Pythonfan” will be a little disappointed.

Every member of the ESS get this bilingual Magazine (Dutch/English) four times a year. The LITTERATURA SERPENTIUM and the ESS is to everybody who “makes in snakes” very very much to be recommended (esp. to authors too!!) !!!

This 1997 published book counts slightly more then 200 pages, and is written by Brian A Kend. The general chapter and the species section is approx. 50-50. In the middle of the book you`ll find great photos (sadly a bit small by the size). Some rare photos, like for example of a Carpet Python from the Cape York peninsula, or a M. s. cheynei from Cape Tribulation let the heart beat faster of every Carpet Python fan ……. Several maps, diagrams and illustrations make this book complete. All in all this book is very to be recommended!!

This book has around 100 pages and is written by Geordie Torr. You`ll find in this book a general section (with for example Evolution; Taxonomy; Anatomy; up to cage design etc.) and a species chapter. A lot of works of the famous Herpetologist Prof. Dr. R. Shine are worked out in this book (no wonder, G. Toor was a student of R. Shine). These works are a enrichment for this book, without any doubt. Beside some diagrams, illustrations and maps, you`ll find very spectacular photos (for example of M. s. cheynei from Cape Tribulation; or a white Olive Python etc.). This book is very much to be recommended!!

PYTHONS OF THE WORLD Volume I, Australia from David G. and Tracy M. Barker is in my opinion one of the most important books about Australian Pythons at all. On the 171 pages you find everything about Description, Sex determination, Size, Distribution, Habitat, Feeding, Breeding, Eggs, Hatchlings, and often a Comment to every species / subspecies. After this text there attached is mostly a table. There you can find very comfortable all available datas about the reproduction. The fantastic and often unique photos in the middle of the book, plus a lot of good maps make this book to an absolutely must for everybody who will gain a better and deeper knowledge on this Boids. A great book!! Very very much to be recommended!!!
